Beaver Pond Site 5 Westminster Ponds ESA

London, Ontario, Canada

The water here is still, but does trickle out below the dam.
This beaver ponds sits just south of Commissioners Road. Located very close to the intersection with Adelaide Road & Commissioners and a Railroad Track runs very near to this site in a NW - SE direction. The grassy Meadow to east covers a old landfill site. The Hospital Incinerator is just to the West of the Pond and the parking lot for Parkwood Hospital and Westminster Ponds drains into this pond. In the winter snow cover is pushed over toward a creek that drains directly into these Beaver Ponds. We wonder how this wetland area has changed in relation to the growing size of the hospital. Has the topography been altered influencing the amount of water draining from this site in this direction? Does winter snow removal from the parking lots influence the amount and quality of this water?

Bull Frogs could be heard croaking here and jumping into the water, but I was unable to catch a picture of one. Not much other wildlife seen around. All day, everything was pretty quiet. Algae and oil film can be seen forming on the water's edge here. I did spend some time following this beautiful blue butterfly about. Elusive little fellas are not very photogenic - they do not stop for long. This picture does no justice to the beauty of this butterfly. Gorgeous colours of soft blues.

I was fortunate enough to see the Beaver today! I was not quick enough with my phone, but I watched the typical V wake they leave behind and sure enough, there was the beaver. Also saw a Blue Heron and many dragon flies. There seems to be quick a slick of algae and some oil on the edge by he actual beaver dam there. Today I saw a beaver swim away from this sight and off into some bull rushes. The geese and ducks who have used the roof of the beaver lodge as their own nest over the summer - seem to have left. Just some barn swallows, and red winged blackbirds flying about today.

Killdeer, Redwing Blackbirds are present in good numbers here. Tad Poles were popping up to the surface for air. Geese, Mallard Ducks, Barn Sawallow - nesting in tree cavity, beaver dam is present - a false lodge and a larger lodge are also present. Geese are nesting on the lodge.

Phragmites are seen on a central island in the middle of this beaver pond.
