Pt. Petre Provincial Wildlife Area

Lake Ontario at Soup Harbour

Ontario, Canada

Walk or drive down the first dirt road to the lake at the sign for Pt. Petre. At the rocky beach shoreline Lake Ontario can be accessed for testing. Just tested along the shore using our golf ball retriever to reach out into the water a short distance. Depending on wind conditions this area can be subject to undertow so not advisable to go out very far into the lake at times like that. Today was moderately windy with some small whitecaps on the lake further out. Lake is much higher now than it will be in summertime.

Sunny and calm evening with gentle wave action. Minimal rainfall the past few weeks. 3 adults and child partying here playing loud music. Dead cormorant just up on the high edge of parking area before stepping down to the rock beach. May contact Dept of Fisheries tomorrow to ask if they care for any reporting of dead waterfowl. Sunny evening with calm winds and light waves.

Sunny and clear with low winds. Water still high but receeding since last testing. Moderate waves lapping ashore. Loon and seagull swimming and fishing. Lots of small frogs hopping along shoreline and dragonflies in the air. Lots of garbage, cans, paper, diaper, etc from day trippers ....picked up and sorted properly to recycle. Spoke with a neighbour who was walking her dog and discussed what we were doing with Water Rangers testing.

Sunny and windy morning with moderately strong wave action and few whitecaps further out on the lake. Interesting colour contrast in the lake today with brown much of the way from shoreline out to a definite line in the water where it became bluish/green. Lake level is extremely high compared to a month ago when previous reading taken, with no limestone ledge shoreline walkable anymore. Depth where we test is no deeper though due to the flat bottom that extends quite far out into lake. Lots of seagulls flying and squacking overhead and on the water. Picked up some garbage, plastic, paper & cans in the firepits nearby our test site, but this entire Point Petre area is regularily littered from end to end by inconsiderate & mindless people who come here to hang out in a remote region on the Lake.

Cloudy and moderately windy day. Some cormorants and seagulls in the air and many very tiny bugs floating in the water and in the air. Lake level higher than usual....this shoreline will increase as the water recedes during summer and as the St Lawrence seaway locks take their affect on levels.
