Pt. Petre Provincial Wildlife Area

Lake Ontario at Soup Harbour

Ontario, Canada

Walk or drive down the first dirt road to the lake at the sign for Pt. Petre. At the rocky beach shoreline Lake Ontario can be accessed for testing. Just tested along the shore using our golf ball retriever to reach out into the water a short distance. Depending on wind conditions this area can be subject to undertow so not advisable to go out very far into the lake at times like that. Today was moderately windy with some small whitecaps on the lake further out. Lake is much higher now than it will be in summertime.

Sunny with some thin cloud cover rolling in and fairly windy, but not much chop on the lake surface today. Few monarchs and very small green frogs seen. No birds or bugs around. Some folks hanging out here enjoying the nice day.

Overcast and calm winds. Has been very dry for a long time....rain needed badly. Lake levels still high along shoreline but depth no different. Songbirds and insects around but no seabirds at all this time. Collected as much garbage to dispose of and cans to recycle as we could fit into a bag we had with us.

Sunny day with medium winds and no rainfall in past 24 hours. Lake is calm but much further up along the shoreline than normal...at least 8-10 metres....but given how the limestone ledges here are so flat and extend out into the lake so far, the actual water depth doesn't very much . Lots of seagulls around squawking and flying about.

Bit overcast with medium winds and some chop on the lake today. No rainfall in past 24 hours. No wildlife around at all that we could hear or see. So much garbage tossed all around the beach and bushes. We picked up what we could with the few bags we had, mostly cans and bottles that we can recycle. Discouraging to see how bad it can get in just the few months since we were last here.

No rain past 24 hours. Sunny , hot & humid and calm winds. Lake edge is much further out now. Monarch butterflies, water or grass snake along the rock shore, spiders and red ants.

No rain in past 24 hours. Sunny with a few clouds beginning to form. Calm winds and gentle waves. Surprisingly no birds to be seen....just a few insects , caterpillar and nice brown butterfly. Family with a little girl came along and she helped me by finding the caterpillar . We talked about Water Rangers and they thanked us for what we’re doing.

Bit under 6 mm rain past 24 hours, Sunny and winds picking up here and making for some chop on the water. No water birds around today but many small birds in the woods , as well as a few monarch butterflies, mosquitoes and a green frog along the path in to the beach from the road. Usual garbage left around this spot but not able to take any away with me as I was riding my bicycle today doing my ride for kids cancer funding .https://greatcyclechallenge.ca/Riders/DonRoss

Just 3 MM rain overnight. Ice is off the lake on this, our first visit to Pt Petre this year.....suspect it has been off for several weeks but can’t confirm so will mark this date for ice-off. Very windy today so the waves are really coming in heavy. No sign of any wildlife around this spot or anywhere during our 1 hour walk here today....hiding out from the winds? Someone has cut back the bushes and left them piled here...also lots of the usual garbage left and dumped by idiots.

Very windy today so large whitecaps on the lake and waves crashing ashore. Bit tricky getting sample but managed OK. Had to do estimate for water depth and it was unchanged from previously done here. Partly sunny/cloudy and mild morning. Lots of seagulls flying about.
