Three Mile Creek
Mobile, Alabama, United States
Three mile creek is a highly modified channelized stream. It faces significant impacts from urban stormwater runoff, Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSO's), litter, sedimentation and excessive nutrient loads. More than 70% of the watershed is characterized by urban land cover.
The creek was listed as an impaired water by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) due to pathogens (bacteria) in 2004 and for low levels of dissolved oxygen due to organic enrichment (nutrients) in 1996. A Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) - was prepared by ADEM for the creek to aid in reducing impairment due to organic enrichment in 2006 and bacteria in 2013.
A comprehensive watershed management plan for Three Mile Creek was created in 2013 and currently many projects are ongoing or being planned to connect citizens to the creek and restore and revitalize the creek and surrounding area.
Drainage area at sampling site is approximately 12,300 acres.
Sampling site is on North bank of creek just east of where the drainage ditch joins the creek.
