Kyd Brook
London, Bromley, United Kingdom
This part of Kyd Brook runs within Crofton Wood near the wooden bridge that crosses Kyd Brook, which is near Eynesford recreation ground. It generally isn't a deep running brook unless it's been raining or has rained then it can be a few feet high or even overflow in places and run quickly. Crofton Woods has a clay soil wood and run off from the woods enters the brook in various places. There is a surface water overflow (S.W.O) running into it at this location. Further upstream there are 2 more S.W.Os and and a combined sewer overflow (C.S.O) which discharges untreated sewage into Kyd Brook at certain times, especially during heavy rain.

View all photosThere has been an ongoing pollution at this S.W.O since I started water monitoring back in 2023, this started as laundry detergent. Recently there has been the smell of sewage combined with laundry detergent. This has been reported please see previous notes.
Currently this pollution is being investigated by Thames water and will hopefully be fixed soon, also stated in previous notes.
This morning when I visited the S.W.O there was a smell of sewage combined with laundry detergent and discharge coming from the S.W.O. After taking samples and photos this has been reported to Thames Water and the environment agency ref 02408224. I recieved an email from Thames water saying that they will investigate further. The tanker in a residential road is now going more frequently which is causing distress to the residents. I do hope this is finally resolved soon.
Near the S.W.O there is a slight smell of sewage, the water is low and slow moving, its been very dry lately with only slight rain a few days ago. The brook has natural debris within it but the water is clear. The other side of the S.W.O you can see greyish discoloured water which spread quiet a way down stream. This has been reported on the government pollution website https://www.gov.uk/report-water-pollution ref 02404106.
Today there was a strong rotting smell with a hint of sewage and laundry detergent, it could be sewage fungus. This has been reported on the new government website for reporting water pollution in England ref - 02400689.
There is a known C.S.O upstream. The E.D.M showed that the last discharge was on the 7th June 2025 from 17:45- 20:00 = 2hrs 45mins.
Even though this water way is polluted further upstream in deeper pockets there are baby stickleback, I'm presuming and a pair of Mallard Ducks. For the past few years a pair of Mallard Ducks have been located here but there are never any sightings of baby Ducks so I again presume that they just visit for the fish.
There is a surface water overflow at this site and it is also downstream from a known combined sewer overflow.
