As me and my daughter approached the bridge, a muskrat was swimming right where we ended up sampling. It is a semi-aquatic rodent and looks similar to a beaver except it has a skinny straight tail instead of a paddle. It dove and swam away before I could get a picture. Also, on our way to our sampling spot, we saw a mallard duck pair, male and female.
The sun was out with no cloud cover.

This spot seems to be a drainage creek for storm water. This is a great place to monitor seasonal water quality fluctuations as the levels of sodium chloride (NaCl) road salt, will be higher than normal at this time of the year. It seems to have levelled out since my initial measurements and I hope to find more benthics as the summer progresses. So far the benthics have been elusive, which would be expected from the recent measurements taken in this past month.
Must be a porcupine in the area as I've been noticing bark missing from the tops of the trees along the path.

Recruiting more help with water samples, glad my classmates like this as much as myself. Julie and Jordan came to collect benthics so they could start their own collections!! 2 beaver dams located 15 meters apart and evidence of the busy beaver scattered about.... see pictures. When they ID their benthics I will update what they found in their samples.
