About

The Somenos Marsh Wildlife Society was founded in 1986 as the Friends of Somenos and the SMWS was incorporated as a charitable society in 1989. Since then, we have championed the preservation and restoration of the S’amunu Watershed and S’amunu Conservation Area. In doing so we have formed strong relationships and partnerships with Cowichan Tribes, local governments, fellow NGO’s, landowners, and agency regulators.

Our Work:
• Leading our GreenStreams program to monitor, preserve, restore, and maintain S’amunu Watershed biodiversity
• Administering our Community Stewardship Program for stream and lakeside residents as well as community volunteerism
• Building and maintaining wildlife viewing facilities at the Somenos Marsh Open Air Classroom and Drinkwater dock
• Producing interpretive signage and related information materials to inform and educate residents and visitors
• Hosting the annual WildWings Nature & Arts Festival
• Speaking for S’amunu Flora and Fauna who have no voice

Water testing protocol

Water quality testing is done year round. There are 6 to 8 sampling locations that are monitored, depending on the season. One location is Somenos Lake, while other locations are on the streams flowing into and out of the lake. Parameters monitored include temp., dissolved oxygen, pH, SPC, TDS, orthophosphate, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite. Occasional grab samples are send for lab analysis for algae ID and metal levels.
