Little Lagoon
Gulf Shores, Alabama, United States
This is our lab location thanks to George and Jean Dunn. Site 1 is the confluence of a natural drainage bayou linking Little Lagoon to Lake Shelby in the Gulf State Park. While our overall conclusion is Little Lagoon water quality is not seriously impaired we see some of the highest freshwater/groundwater inputs, highest nutrient levels, consistently highest bacteria counts and at times very high phytoplankton counts in this part of the lagoon. There are many canals cut into lagoon properties in this area and many aging septic systems in this part of the lagoon watershed.
