A citizen called to report an oil sheen at rangeline rd. just south of rabbit creek. when mobile baykeeper staff arrived at the site a noticeable sheen was observed on the drainage ditch and distinct petroleum odor could be detected from the road. on closer investigation mobile baykeeper staff noted a light sheen with small amount of rainbow. their appeared to be a cleanup/containment underway in the drainage ditch at approximately 5905 rangeline service rd. theodore, al 36582. staff noted the sheen increase in size and thickness over the course of the next 30 minutes and then start to decrease. very little noticeable sheen could be observed on the surface of the creek once it passed under rangeline rd to the west.

    Issue was investigated by Mobile Baykeeper staff. Staff took pictures, sample, and reported incident to ADEM and Mobile 311. Will update as information becomes available.

    City of Mobile personnel inspecter the area on the morning of 8/4. It was determined the source of the sheen was an ALDOT equipment oil spill that had not been properly mitigated. ALDOT will be responsible for ensuring proper mitigation and any necessary remediation is performed.
