How to identify it

  • It is the only iris in North America with entirely yellow flowers
  • Blooms between April and July at the top of stems
  • Grows 30 centimetres to one metre tall
  • Grow in groups of two to 10
  • Flowers have three drooping, deep-yellow sepals with purple-brown markings that look like large petals, surrounding three smaller upright petals
  • Leaves are flattened, two to three centimetres wide and up to one metre long, fanning out from the base
  • Older seeds are black, floating, and cannot reproduce
  • Seeds are found within capsules four to eight centimetres long

Why it's bad

  • Can displace native plants
  • Reduces available habitat for other wildlife, such as fish and nesting birds
  • Poisonous to humans and animals if eaten
