Yellow Iris
How to identify it
- It is the only iris in North America with entirely yellow flowers
- Blooms between April and July at the top of stems
- Grows 30 centimetres to one metre tall
- Grow in groups of two to 10
- Flowers have three drooping, deep-yellow sepals with purple-brown markings that look like large petals, surrounding three smaller upright petals
- Leaves are flattened, two to three centimetres wide and up to one metre long, fanning out from the base
- Older seeds are black, floating, and cannot reproduce
- Seeds are found within capsules four to eight centimetres long
Why it's bad
- Can displace native plants
- Reduces available habitat for other wildlife, such as fish and nesting birds
- Poisonous to humans and animals if eaten
