How to identify it

  • Leaves are 3-10cm and circular or heart shaped
  • Flowers have 5 yellow petals
  • Stems are 1 meter long and are branched
  • Stems are below the surface of the water
  • Bottom rooted perennial plant

Why it's bad

  • Can shade out native plants
  • Reduces available habitat for other wildlife, such as fish and nesting birds
  • Affect water quality by decreasing oxygen levels, creating stagnant waters, ideal for breeding mosquitoes
  • Makes it difficult to enjoy boating, swimming and fishing
